The Anonymous Source (Audible Audio Edition) AC Fuller Jeff Hays Books
If this book had stayed focused on the themes of journalistic integrity and the power of the media, it would have been a better read.Instead it kept meandering into other vague hints of storylines dealing with the relationships and families of the characters. These threads seemed to serve no purpose other than to lead the reader into a sequel, which I have no interest in purchasing.
I do enjoy plots that involve conspiracies and this book had a strong start. Unfortunately, it was not tight enough to keep me in suspense. I would not consider the ending to be a cliffhanger since I did not care enough about the unfinished story lines to even wonder how or if the next book will complete them.

The Anonymous Source (Audible Audio Edition) AC Fuller Jeff Hays Books Reviews
Ever heard that silly supposition of a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a huge storm happening the other side of the earth? It is all about the interconnectedness of things and how sometimes the smallest of things may have huge and unexpected repercussions.
The Anonymous Source is in many ways a practical application of this hypothesis.
For Alex Vane it started with his noticing a beautiful woman at a court hearing of a man, Santiago, accused of killing a professor, John Martin. Captivated he follows her late when she left the court. It is only a day or so later he discovers she is Camila, erstwhile lover of the professor.
The next link in the chain of small events is when followed by a tall stranger who turns out to have proof that Santiago is indeed innocent in the murder of the professor.
But the chain of events does not stop here but goes even further back in time to a year earlier when a well known billionaire and financier got killed the same day as the 9/11 attacks on the Trade Centre.
A. C. Fuller in this first in series of Alex Vane, reporter, is unveiling step by step a series of murders, conspiracy and greed of startling dimensions. I was by the end of the third chapter so engrossed in what was happening that I finished this book in one long sitting right up to the end. And the best part of it all is, I already got the next book waiting to be opened! It might be seriously addicting, but regret it you will not.
Enjoy!
Wow. I'm blown away. Full disclosure, suspenseful thrillers are not my genre, but this book was amazing. It caught and held my attention because it was the perfect blend of plot complexity, tight writing, layered and textured characters, all set against an extremely authentic-feeling backdrop. I FELT like I was in NYC without being bogged in details (or Hawaii, which was a lovely counterbalance to the urban hustle), in the same way that I FELT the authenticity of the journalistic world our hero, Alex Vane, operates in. I was steeped, and I loved it.
Alex Vane is a fun character to follow, (the kind of guy who keeps a king-sized bed in an NYC studio apartment, so that tells you a lot right there). He's obsessed with his physique, maybe a bit of a playboy, but with a heart of gold. But it was Camila, his erstwhile partner, who really captivated me. Emotionally attuned, witty, and smart, I loved this character. She was not just a foil for Alex as they seek to unravel who killed her professor ex-lover, but his equal, with an almost uncanny ability to read people and situations. I loved this line about her as she contemplated her family "Generations of congealed suffering moved through her."
And that brings me to the prose. AC Fuller's writing style is a joy to read. Not stiff in the slightest (as I sort of imagined--unfairly perhaps--was the norm for this genre), he layers in beautiful but spare detail, keeps the prose tight, the plot moving, without ever sacrificing style or voice or atmosphere, and with a healthy dose of humor peppered in for good measure.
As if that weren't enough, this novel is set just after the events of 9/11, and Fuller has managed to capture the aftermath of that reality, the shifting changes in news and how we perceive and receive it. The amount of work that went into this book is evident in the effortlessness in which I was able to absorb it.
A five star read in every way.
If this book had stayed focused on the themes of journalistic integrity and the power of the media, it would have been a better read.
